Words

Free writing typically isn’t my thing. I generally prefer structure. Nonetheless, this piece of free writing worked itself out in my mind and then sat in a note on my phone for more than two years. I think it’s time to let it out.

Words.
A way to communicate. Express ourselves.
Spoken sounds or written characters used to convey meaning, Webster says.

Sounds kind of boring.
Perfunctory. Basic.
Oh, but words are anything but.

Words have power.
They can spring forth laughter or tears.
Facilitate peace or induce outrage.
Crush the soul and leave lifelong scars in their wake.
Soothe like a healing balm.
Make one's spirit soar with joy, hope, or encouragement.

Actions speak louder than words, they say.
Ah, but words can inspire actions.
It isn't really meant to be one or the other, but both, isn't it?

"Use your words," I say to my children.
"I don't know how you're feeling or how to help you if you don't tell me."
Words free up our emotions.

"What will his first word be?" I wonder about my infant son.
Oh, how we look forward to that all-important first step in communication.
We buy books dedicated to "100 First Words."
How many words can they say, doctors ask in those early toddler days.

Words matter.

God created words.
In fact, he used words to create.
"Let there be light" -- and light burst forth.
He spoke and it came to be.
Just like that.
Words create.

Words tear down.
A few twisted words, and humanity fell.
Words destroy.
First Satan's. Now ours.

God knows about words.
He is THE word.
The word made flesh, who dwelt among us.
His words are a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path.
They are not empty. They do not return void.
They are true. Pure. Upright. Intentional.

How do I use my words?
